All of the 2027 Colors of the Year – Paint Trends and More

Its that time again! The time when all the major paint companies announce their choices for the Color of the Year designation.

You see, each year all of the major paint companies choose one color, or a palette of colors, to be their Color of the Year.

The paint colors are chosen based on where design and fashion trends are going on the upcoming year.

Some companies choose paint colors that are inspirational and aspirational. They can be off-beat and sometimes even shocking. The colors seem to be reaching for an aesthetic that is good in theory, but never really takes off.

Other companies tend to choose tried and true tones that look amazing in many different style homes. The paint colors are more classic, usable shades. These types of Color of the Year picks tend to be the ones that hit with the general public and become popular in the years to come.

This year, its a mix of both inspirational paint colors and usable paint colors. One thing they all have in common though – and its green.

Somehow, most of the major paint companies chose a shade of green as their paint color of the year.

All About Green

Green is back for 2027. We’re seeing it in both the home design and the fashion spaces.

While classic sage green is still in style, and probably always will be, we’re seeing a move towards lots of different types of green.

Dark heritage greens, earthy olive greens, fresh botanical greens and even soft mint greens are taking center stage.

There is always a psychology behind home and fashion color trends, and we can assume that the renewed focus on green is reflective of people wanting to feel connected to nature, but still give their space its own personality.

If we trace the trends back over the past 30 years, we see how color trends have shifted. We went from the beige trend in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, to the gray trend that extended from mid the mid 2000’s to the mid 2010’s, followed by the greige trend of the mid 2010’s, then into the all white trend of the late 2010’s and early 2020’s, and finally into few years of warm whites and earthy tones. And now, we’re solidly in a phase of COLOR!

Bold colors, dark colors and color drenching have taken over Pinterest and social media and moved us all towards the idea that each home can have its own personality.

Should you color drench every home of your house to make it Pinterest worthy? No! In fact, this trend isn’t the best one for the average home (it needs lots of architectural detail such as moulding and trim to make it really hit).

If your home is still painted in greige or all white, it doesn’t mean that you have to repaint anything. You can still incorporate lots of color into these spaces with accent shades. In fact, this is the benefit of these paint colors – you can change styles without repainting every few years.

So, with all of this in mind, lets take a look at the actual colors of the year, and see if you should start painting, or maybe just begin by accenting with the newest hottest trend – green.

Sherwin Williams 2027 Color of the Year – Celery

We’re starting with the most “interesting” choice for color of the year among the paint companies. I start with Sherwin Williams because it is the most accessible paint for most people. You can buy it at any Lowes or one of the many Sherwin Williams stores in most towns.

SW Celery 6421 is a soft, muted green that has yellow undertones. It is aptly named Celery because it really is the color of celery.

Sherwin Williams describes it as, “an airy, herbal green that embodies fresh perspectives and elegance.”

Practically speaking, Celery is a little hard to use in the average home. It has too much color to be a neutral, and not enough appeal for most homeowners to adopt it into their palette.

But, this choice does signal a trend towards organic, natural shades that have unique visual interest.

Benjamin Moore 2027 Color of the Year – Webster Green

Benjamin Moore Webster Green is a bit safer of a choice, but not totally safe. It isn’t a dark, almost neutral green that is easily used as a grounding color in an otherwise safe color palette.

Instead, it is a mid-tone heritage green that is a throw back to 18th-century Colonial and 19th-century Victorian architecture.

Benjamin Moore described it as, “A confident hue with inherent character, this quintessential green is both adaptable and impactful.”

Webster Green is fresh in a different way than Celery. It carries just a hint more brightness than the typical popular mid-tone or dark greens, which make it a more bold choice.

Again, this paint shade is bringing color back to the forefront of home design. It is slightly more usable than Celery, but has enough depth that it will probably be reserved as an accent color in most homes.

Behr 2027 Color of the Year – Grounded

Behr Grounded is the most classic Color of the Year pick this year. It is reminiscent of those deep, dark, highly usable greens that I’ve mentioned earlier.

Grounded is a very dark green paint color with brown undertones.

Behr calls is, “A mossy olive with earthy brown undertones.” It is organic and elegant at the same time.

Due to its depth, Grounded is great for home exteriors or accent spaces, but could definitely be used as a wall color in the right room. It will pair nicely with other earth tone colors and is both on trend and traditional.

Other 2027 Colors of the Year – Valspar, Glidden and Dunn-Edwards

While Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore and Behr are the biggest players in the paint world, many other companies announce colors of the year as well.

Here are a few of the other picks.

Valspar Cottage Door 8004-38E Paint Color Swatch

Valspar Cottage Door is a very nice mid-tone blue that is saturated and elevated.

This steely blue is very usable as a wall color or accent color. It has a lot of depth, so it needs adequate lighting to not be too overpowering, but it brings a clean, welcoming vibe to any space.

Glidden/PPG Artifact Paint Color paint swatch - PPG10-16

Glidden Artifact is a warm, smoky, midtone blue that feels calm, fresh, and grounded.

With a dose of gray undertones, Artifact is a mature blue that is elegant and refined.

Both Cottage Door and Artifact are safe color choices for color of the year. They can easily be used in the highly popular blue and white coastal trend that stores like Sedona and Lily celebrate.

I seem them more as where color trends have been than where color trends are going. But they are beautiful colors that are very classic, and they will have staying power.

Dunn-Edwards French Press Coffee Color Swatch - DEBN 07

Dunn-Edwards French Press Coffee is a deep brown.

It is a grounded and earthy color that is best reserved for accent spaces. Browns were very popular on the runway and in home design last year, and French Press Coffee is a nod to this trend.

Final Thoughts on the 2027 Paint Colors of the Year

2027 Paint Colors of the Year in paint cans - brown, greens and blues

When I look at all of the 2027 Colors of the Year, a few things stand out.

First and foremost – green. The designers at the major paint companies are predicting that green will be the hot color in 2027. They’re probably right.

Second – depth. Almost all of the color of the year picks are highly saturated paint colors. Every shade by Celery is a mid-tone or deeper.

Third – color. Airy neutrals and light whites didn’t make the cut this year. Instead, we are seeing bold, fresh colors that are anything but neutral.

Overall, I think we can expect 2027 to be a year of color. This can be done by repainting your rooms, or even by just adding some fresh colors in accent spaces. This can be done with throw pillows, blankets, rugs, pictures and more.

Whatever you choose, this list is a great place to start to figure out which colors you should consider incorporating into your own personal home style in 2027.
