Sherwin Williams Celery – 2027 Color of the Year

Sherwin Williams announced their 2027 Color of the Year. Like many other paint companies in 2027, they went with a green.

Their choice for a green color of the year isn’t the most conventional though. Instead, Sherwin Williams chose Celery.

Celery (SW 6421) is a soft, muted green that is light and airy. It has yellow undertones that give it a hint of brightness.

Sherwin Williams describes it as, “an airy, herbal green that embodies fresh perspectives and elegance.”

While I agree with the fresh perspectives, to me, Celery doesn’t embody elegance.

Instead, it looks unique and fun in the right space.

I can see Celery being used in a color maxxing space alongside coordinated wallpaper. I can envision it in a farmhouse style home as a fun accent. I can even see it in a bedroom (maybe). But I really don’t see it in an elegant living room or kitchen space.

The Nitty Gritty Details on Sherwin Williams Celery

As I mentioned earlier, Celery has yellow undertones. This gives it a fresh herbal quality that looks welcoming. It reminds me of springtime and gives a youthful vibe.

Celery has an LRV (Light Reflectance Value) of 71. This means that reflects a lot of light back into the room and works in most spaces. It isn’t too dark for a hallway or too light for a living room.

Like most paint colors, Celery will look different based on the actual lighting your home. In cooler lighting, you will see Celery look a bit more green. In warmer lighting, Celery will lean into its yellow undertone.

On a home exterior, Celery will look even lighter and brighter due to the abundance of light. Inside, Celery will still look light, but will definitely show up as a color on your walls.

Trim Colors for Sherwin Williams Celery

Trim Colors for SW Celery - High Reflective White and Pure White

My favorite trim color for most paint shades is Sherwin Williams Pure White. It has subtle gray and yellow undertones that keep it from being too stark, but it still looks fresh and clean next to almost all paint colors.

It pairs well with Celery and will provide a good contrast between the wall and any surrounding woodwork like trim or crown molding.

If you like a more crisp trim color, pair Celery with Sherwin Williams High Reflective White. High Reflective White is their brightest and lightest white. It leans more warm than cool, but has no noticeable undertones.

Another option for Celery is to lean into the color maxxing or color drenching trend and to paint your woodwork also in Celery.

How to Get Sherwin Williams Celery

Sherwin Williams Celery has two color codes – SW 6421 and HGTV 6421. Don’t let this be confusing. Sherwin Williams HGTV paint is sold at Lowes, while all of the other Sherwin Williams paints are sold are your local Sherwin Williams stores.

They are the same color, they just change the code based on where you are buying your paint from.

Final Thoughts on Sherwin Williams Celery

Celery is an interesting choice for Color of the Year. It has enough brightness that it can’t really be considered a neutral or a pastel. But it doesn’t have so much depth or color that should only be reserved for an accent color.

I’ve seen many designers declare it to be a complete miss, but the real test is the general public. Will we see a lot of homes being painted in Celery? Probably not.

But it may be just right in a home that wants a fresh, unique paint color to set their home apart from the masses of white or neutral homes.

If you are considering Celery, you will want to make sure it works in your home before painting. You can pick up a reusable peel and stick paint sample of Celery here. These paint samples are perfect because you can use them to see what a paint color will look like in your home without actually putting any paint on the wall.
