Choosing the right green paint color for your home can be overwhelming.
You probably want that lush green vibe that is so popular on Instagram and Pinterest right now, but may be concerned with getting the the wrong undertones or too dark of a shade.
With a little bit of knowledge and information on different green paints, you can choose a color with confidence.
Two of the most popular green paint colors by Sherwin Williams are Dried Thyme and Evergreen Fog. Both are great green paint colors, but they have some important differences.
Let’s dive into these two green paint colors to help you figure out which one is the best for you.

Sherwin Williams Dried Thyme

Dried Thyme is a medium dark green paint color that is refined, earthy and fresh. It isn’t a too grassy looking because it has a blue undertone that softens it while also giving it an approachable vibe.
Dried Thyme is a very nice green that looks deep and balanced without being too dark.

Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog

Evergreen Fog is a medium depth green paint color. Evergreen Fog blends gray, green and a hint of blue to make a sophisticated paint color that doesn’t feel too juvenile or harsh. Instead, it perfectly straddles the line between being bold and appearing approachable.
Evergreen Fog was named as a Color of the Year for Sherwin Williams in 2022. In the years since, it hasn’t faded in popularity.

Similarities and Difference Between Dried Thyme and Evergreen Fog
The similarities between Dried Thyme and Evergreen Fog are that they both can provide depth in a space that needs a refreshing pop of color. Both are cool shades with blue undertones, but also have a balanced feel to them. Both have a bit of gray in them which gives the a mature look.
Evergreen Fog has more gray in it though, making it a bit more neutral looking than Dried Thyme. While both will definitely look green, Evergreen Fog is slightly more subtle in its presentation.
For example, in this photo, you can see that Evergreen Fog may look more like a gray shade than a green shade when compared to Dried Thyme. But don’t worry. In your home without other greener greens, Evergreen Fog show up plenty green.

Dried Thyme is also darker than Evergreen Fog. Practically speaking, this means that Evergreen Fog may be slightly more usable in a room with limited light, although both shades will really benefit from good natural and artificial lighting.
Because of their similar undertones, they can be used with a lot of the same coordinating colors. Dried Thyme and Evergreen Fog pair nicely with blues, tans, light neutrals, pinks and oranges.
Neither shade is objectively better than the other, but people can have preferences about which they like more depending on how far they want to lean into a green shade.
Overall, Evergreen Fog is probably the “safer” choice of green in this comparison. Sherwin Williams chose it as a Color of the Year, so it can be surmised that they felt it had a wider appeal than Dried Thyme.
That being said, the green trend has taken off in a huge way, and people are choosing greens that are even more bold and daring than either of these.
Personally, I would choose (and actually have chosen) Evergreen Fog for my own home. I like that it is more neutral, lighter, and more subtle while still giving me the earthy, modern vibe that I want.

Where to Use Green Paint Colors
Both Evergreen Fog and Dried Thyme can be used on cabinets, walls, exteriors, front doors, shutters, and anything else that you want to give definition or depth.
