What Color is Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray?

Chelsea Gray Benjamin Moore Paint Drop

Chelsea Gray is a dark gray paint color that is rich and velvety.

While Chelsea Gray is dark, it also has a sort of softness to it that makes it approachable. It isn’t a hard, steely sort of gray.

Chelsea Gray isn’t the most classic type of gray paint color either. When I think of a classic gray, I usually think of a cool gray.

Instead, Chelsea Gray doesn’t feel quite as industrial as some gray paint colors do.

This is because of the specific undertones that work together to make Chelsea Gray.

Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray Undertones

Chelsea Gray has purple and brown undertones that make it feel approachable.

In addition, when you compare Chelsea Gray to another gray with purple undertones, you see that it also has a bit of a green undertone.

These undertones are what give Chelsea Gray the hint of softness, and keep it from feeling too chilly.

Is Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray Warm or Cool?

Chelsea Gray by Benjamin Moore

Chelsea Gray is a warm paint color.

With its brown, purple and green undertones, Chelsea Gray has a warmth that feels very balanced against the typical coolness of a gray paint color.

It doesn’t feel too warm, but also isn’t too cool.

In fact, you may not even think of it as a warm gray until you compare it to a more true gray. Then, you’ll really see the brown that Chelsea Gray has in it.

Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray LRV

Chelsea Gray has an LRV of 23. This puts it in the dark range of paint colors.

But, Chelsea Gray isn’t as dark as many dark shades. It is just over the line, and could almost be considered a very dark medium paint color.

If you want a really dark gray that borders on black, Chelsea Gray isn’t going to be the right pick for you.

But, if you want to add depth and dimension to your space without too much harshness, Chelsea Gray is a good choice for a paint color.

Where Can I Use Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray?

Chelsea Gray, Benjamin Moore

Chelsea Gray is a great color for accents, such as cabinets, furniture, trim, doors or accent walls.

Since it has a lot of depth, I probably wouldn’t recommend it for a whole room unless you want a dramatic sort of look.

It looks great in a dining room with white wainscoting or in a study for a moody sort of look.

Chelsea Gray can work in any style home, including traditional, transitional, farmhouse, contemporary, modern and more.

Trim Colors for Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray

Choosing a trim color for paint can be difficult. Here are my top two choices for trim paint colors to go with Chelsea Gray.

Chelsea Gray Benjamin Moore Trim Colors

First, Chelsea Gray looks great with Chantilly Lace.

Chantilly Lace is my go-to paint color for trim by Benjamin Moore. It is almost undertone free, so it works with every paint color. Chantilly Lace is bright and clean.

Second, Chelsea Gray looks good with Decorator’s White.

Decorator’s White is a white paint color that is a little softer than Chantilly Lace. It has gray and purple undertones. This undertones give Decorator’s White a more muted appearance.

It will still look white, but not quite as bright and stark as Chantilly Lace.

How Does Chelsea Gray Compare to Other Paint Colors?

When I do a full paint color review like this, I always like to compare the paint color I’m talking about to other paint colors that are in the same color family.

This can be helpful in determining which paint color is the right one for your home.

So, let’s look at Chelsea Gray in comparison to three popular gray paint colors: Amherst Gray, Dovetail and Kendall Charcoal.

Chelsea Gray vs. Amherst Gray

Amherst Gray is another popular Benjamin Moore paint color.

It is slightly darker than Chelsea Gray.

Like Chelsea Gray, Amherst Gray has green undertones. But, it doesn’t have the purple undertones that Chelsea Gray has. Additionally, it has a little less brown than Chelsea Gray.

Amherst Gray has a bit more of that steely look you might expect from dark gray paint colors.

Between Chelsea Gray and Amherst Gray, Amherst Gray is probably a little safer bet to use as well, because it doesn’t have as much in the way of undertones.

Chelsea Gray vs. Dovetail

Dovetail is a Sherwin Williams paint color that is very similar to Chelsea Gray.

Dovetail is about the same depth as Chelsea Gray, but has a bit more purple in it.

This makes Dovetail appear a bit warmer than Chelsea Gray at times.

Because Dovetail and Chelsea Gray are so similar, I would try these paint colors in your home to decide which is best.

My favorite way to try out paint colors is with Samplize, but I’ll talk more about that in a minute.

Chelsea Gray vs. Kendall Charcoal

Kendall Charcoal is a dark gray paint color by Benjamin Moore. It is also a part of the Benjamin Moore Favorites fan deck, which means that it is one of the most popular Benjamin Moore grays.

Kendall Charcoal is a good bit darker than Chelsea Gray. It has similar undertones to Chelsea Gray, include green, brown and purple.

Kendall Charcoal seems to have a bit less brown and green in it though, and tends to look a bit stormy than Chelsea Gray does.

If you want a gray that is darker and a bit moodier, Kendall Charcoal is the better pick. It has more depth and edge to it. But, if you like a softer dark gray for your space, Chelsea Gray is a good choice.
