Gauntlet Gray, by Sherwin Williams

Gauntlet Gray is a dark gray paint color by Sherwin Williams.

Gauntlet Gray is one of Sherwin Williams Top 50 Paint Colors. This means that it is very popular among both homeowners and designers.

This is because Gauntlet Gray is a pretty color that works well in a lot of spaces.

If you’re looking for a medium dark gray paint color that makes a statement without being too dark, keep reading for all the details on Gauntlet Gray.

What Does Gauntlet Gray Look Like?

Gauntlet Gary

Gauntlet Gray is a dark gray paint color. It has a luxe sort of look with almost a minky quality to it.

Gauntlet Gray looks like a dark gray, but isn’t so dark that it ever looks like a black. It is bold without being too dramatic due to the softness it has in it.

Outside, Gauntlet Gray will look brighter, and almost like a medium depth gray due to all the natural light.

Gauntlet Gray LRV

Gauntlet Gray has an LRV of 17. LRV stands to Light Reflectance Value, and is a measure of how light or dark a paint color is.

The LRV scale goes from 0 to 100. An LRV of 0 is completely black, so you can see that Gauntlet Gray is a pretty dark paint color.

Sherwin Williams classifies Gauntlet Gray as a “dark” paint color, but it really isn’t all that terribly dark. I would consider it to be more of a medium dark paint color.

There are much darker grays that are still actually gray (and not black) than Gauntlet Gray.

What Undertone Does Gauntlet Gray Have?

Gauntlet Gray SW

Gauntlet Gray is a greige sort of gray. This means that it is a blend of beige and gray. Gauntlet Gray also a bit of a purple undertone in it.

Don’t let this concern you too much though. All gray paint colors have undertones of either green, purple or blue, and as far as undertone’s go, Gauntlet Gray’s purple undertone is fairly subtle.

Is Gauntlet Gray Warm or Cool?

With its brown and purple notes, Gauntlet Gray is a warm paint color. It isn’t the warmest gray paint color, but it definitely leans warm in about any lighting situation.

Because it is a warm gray, Gauntlet Gray doesn’t give that traditional steely look that some gray paints do.

So, if you’re looking for a more traditional gray, this may not be your best bet. But, if you want a gray that contributes to an overall warm palette, Gauntlet Gray is a great choice.

Where Can I Use Gauntlet Gray?

Gauntlet Gray is a great color for an accent wall, a kitchen island or cabinets, on trim or interior doors, or on home exteriors.

Gauntlet Gray goes with just about any home style, and provides that dark neutral that provides the eye with a place to rest.

What Colors Go Well With Gauntlet Gray?

Gauntlet Gray works well with other warm gray paint colors with similar undertones, creams, off-whites, pinks, purples and oranges.

Overall, it favors being paired with other warm shades.

Specifically, Sherwin Williams recommends pairing Gauntlet Gray with Eider White, a soft gray paint color with a purple undertone, Repose Gray, a light greige that shares the same color strip as Gauntlet Gray, and Armagnac, a muted orange paint color.

Trim Colors for Gauntlet Gray

Gauntlet Gray goes will with many different which paint colors. If you want a trim color to go with Gauntlet Gray, my two favorite trim shades from Sherwin Williams are Pure White and High Reflective White.

Trim Colors for Gauntlet Gray

Pure White is a softer white paint color that looks white but isn’t too terribly bright or stark.

High Reflective White is a very clean white paint color that has almost no undertones. It can look a bit more stark, but also just has a very bright look

Both white paint colors go with about any other wall paint color, making them my go-to choices for many paint colors.

How Does Gauntlet Gray Compare to Other Popular Neutrals?

When I do a paint color review, I like to compare the paint color I’m discussing to other popular paint colors that are in the same family or have the same uses.

In this case, I’ll compare Gauntlet Gray with other popular neutral paint colors that have similar uses to Gauntlet Gray. Specifically, we’ll look at Gauntlet Gray vs. Peppercorn, Dovetail, Urbane Bronze, and Kendall Charcoal.

This can be helpful if you know that you want a dark neutral, but haven’t quite figured out if you want a gray, a greige, or a brown.

Gauntlet Gray vs. Peppercorn

Gauntlet Gray vs. Peppercorn

Peppercorn is a dark gray paint color by Sherwin Williams.

Unlike Gauntlet Gray, Peppercorn is more of a true gray, without the beige in it. This makes it more a traditional gray in many peoples’ minds.

Peppercorn is more of a smokey sort of gray, and has blue and purple undertones.

Peppercorn is a bit darker than Gauntlet Gray.

The best way to determine which of these grays will working your space is to try them in your home. While they’re both grays, they are actually quite different.

Peppercorn is going to work better with other cool colors around it, while Gauntlet Gray will go well with more warm shades.

If you’re not sure whether the color palette in your home leans more warm or cool, be sure to pick up Samplize squares of both of these paint colors to see which one works. More on Samplize squares in a bit.

Gauntlet Gray vs. Dovetail

Gauntlet Gray vs. Dovetail

Dovetail is a popular greige paint color by Sherwin Williams. Gauntlet Gray and Dovetail actually share a color strip, meaning they are similar to each other.

But, Dovetail is a bit lighter than Gauntlet Gray. It is more of a true medium gray (or greige, as the case may be), while Gauntlet Gray is more of a medium dark greige.

Like Gauntlet Gray, Dovetail is a blend of gray and beige with a purple undertone.

If you are looking for a medium to dark gray for a home exterior, you may find that Dovetail doesn’t give quite the depth that you looking for, and that Gauntlet Gray is a better choice.

But, if you’re nervous about Gauntlet Gray being too dark in your space, Dovetail is a great alternative that is just a bit lighter.

Gauntlet Gray vs. Urbane Bronze

Gauntlet Gray vs. Urbane Bronze

Urbane Bronze is a dark brown paint color with a lot of gray in it. It was Sherwin Williams 2021 Color of the Year, which helped bring it some increasing popularity.

Urbane Bronze and Gauntlet Gray actually aren’t very similar paint colors. But, they have the same uses. Specifically, people love both these paint colors on home exteriors, cabinets, kitchen islands, trim or interior doors.

Urbane Bronze is a good bit darker than Gauntlet Gray, falling into the dark paint colors category.

It doesn’t have the same softness that Gauntlet Gray has, and looks a bit more striking than it.

If you want a dark color that can act almost like a black paint color, Urbane Bronze is a better pick.

But, if you want a gray shade, go with Gauntlet Gray.

Gauntlet Gray vs. Kendall Charcoal

Gauntlet Gray vs. Kendall Charcoal

Kendall Charcoal is a popular gray paint color by Benjamin Moore. Kendall Charcoal is more of a cool gray though, with green undertones.

Kendall Charcoal is also darker than Gauntlet Gray, and feels more like a true dark gray than Gauntlet Gray does.

If you want a gray that works easily with a variety of other shades, you may find that Kendall Charcoal is a bit more versatile than Gauntlet Gray.
