Sherwin Williams Black Fox: A Rich, Sophisticated Brown

Sherwin Williams Black Fox is the latest dark neutral to be trending on Pinterest, and I’m loving it.

Black Fox is actually pretty similar to Benjamin Moore’s 2026 Color of the Year, Silhouette. But, even better in my opinion.

If you are looking for a dark neutral paint color that is deep and warm, Sherwin Williams Black Fox may just be the right paint color for you. Here is everything that you need to know about it.

Sherwin Williams Black Fox Color Details

Black Fox Sherwin Williams Paint Drop

Black Fox is described by Sherwin Williams as a black neutral with a warm greige undertone. But even though they are the experts on their own paint color, I can’t say that I agree with their assessment.

To me, Black Fox looks more like a brown shade with charcoal and black undertones. It is very dark and could take on a black look if you don’t have good lighting. But it really has too much brown in it to be considered a black paint color in my opinion.

Black Fox is a warm paint color, and this may be appealing to you if you’re into the warm neutral color trend that is popular right now.

While many dark neutrals have obvious green or purple undertones, Black Fox doesn’t really have undertones that lean too heavy in one way or another.

In that way, it is very usable and versatile.

What Goes With Black Fox?

Black Fox is a great neutral because it can go with a lot of different shades. To demonstrate this, let me tell you a bit about the colors that Sherwin WIlliams has listed as coordinating colors for Black Fox.

First, Sherwin Williams pairs Black Fox with Greek Villa. Greek Villa is a light, creamy neutral with a yellow undertone. It looks warm and soft.

Second, Black Fox is paired with Eider White. Eider White is a soft taupe paint color with pink/purple undertones.

Last, Black Fox is paired with Cool Avacado, a green with yellow undertones.

Shades with green and yellow undertones are very rarely paired with colors with purple undertones. So, for Sherwin Williams to consider Black Fox a coordinating color for shades with these opposing undertones indicates that Black Fox doesn’t have very strong undertones.

This means that you can pair Black Fox with so many different shades! It goes with taupes, creams, greiges, greens, yellows, purples and more.

Black Fox Trim Colors

For a trim color, Black Fox also has a lot of options. If you like a bright, clean trim color, Pure White is a good option. If you like a creamier trim shade, you can pair Black Fox with a softer white like Alabaster.

Black Fox Color Strip

Black Fox shares a color strip with some of Sherwin Williams heavy hitters:

These colors are some of the most popular greige paint colors that Sherwin Williams sells, which means they are blends of gray and beige.

While some people think that colors on the color strips are lighter or darker versions of each other, this isn’t true for Sherwin Williams’ shades. But, it does tend to mean that they are in the same color family.

As Sherwin Williams indicates in their description of Black Fox, they consider it to have greige undertones, just like the other shades on this list.

Where Should I Use Black Fox?

Practically speaking, Black Fox is best used as an accent color.

With an LRV of 7, Black Fox is really too dark to use as a whole room paint color for most people. Instead, think cabinets, accent walls, bookshelves, woodwork, painted fireplaces, handrails, and more. Using a dark neutral in these spots creates a place for the eye to rest, and brings a feeling of groundedness to the space.

Black Fox is also a great paint color for home exteriors, since it pairs well with a lot of different shades. It works as a siding color, or as an accent color.

Black Fox Compared

If you are considering Black Fox, you may also be considering Urbane Bronze, Iron Ore, or Silhouette. Let’s compare these shades with Black Fox to see if one is a clear winner for your space.

Black Fox vs. Urbane Bronze

Urbane Bronze is a very popular dark neutral by Sherwin Williams. It was their 2021 Color of the Year, and this designation really brought it to the forefront of dark neutrals.

In many ways, Urbane Bronze is similar to Black Fox. When you compare the two though, you see that Urbane Bronze has a lot more green and a touch more gray in it.

Conversely, Black Fox takes on a much more brown look.

While both are warm paint color, Black Fox is a warmer shade, with more brown in it.

If you are trying to choose between the two, you should consider whether you want your dark neutral to look more brown or more gray.

If you want a shade that just is more neutral but still leans brown, Urbane Bronze is probably better. But, if you want a color that is more decisively brown, go with Black Fox.

Black Fox vs. Iron Ore

Sherwin Williams Iron Ore is a soft black paint color that has very slight blue undertones. In reality, it comes across like a very dark charcoal, or a very light black.

So, while Black Fox looks more brown, Iron Ore looks more black. It doesn’t really have brown in it.

If you have more warm colors in your space, either Iron Ore or Black Fox will work. You can choose based on whether you want a brown or a black for your dark neutral.

But if you have more cool colors in your home, I would lean towards going with Iron Ore.

Black Fox vs. Silhouette

In the introduction, I mentioned Benjamin Moore’s Silhouette. This color was their 2026 Color of the Year, and its pretty similar to Black Fox. It is a dark brown with charcoal undertones.

When you compare it to Black Fox, you can see that Silhouette also has some purple in it.

They are similar paint shades, with similar intentions, but in my opinion, Black Fox is the winner of the two for a few reasons.

The main reason that I would choose Black Fox over Silhouette is this. I find that paint colors with a purple undertone are a bit hard to work with unless the other tones in the room also have purple undertones.

Purple undertones aren’t that popular, and are complete turn offs to many people.

So, unless you have clear purple undertones in other colors in the room (like a wall paint color of Eider White, Snowbound, or Taupe of the Morning), I would go with Black Fox.
