One of the biggest questions in paint is what color is trending right now.
In my many years of paint color research, I have observed a big difference in what the designers say is trending and what is actually trending in people’s homes.
So, to help you decide what paint color is right for you, I’m going to touch on both – what is trending in the home design world, and what is trending in people’s actual homes.
2024 Home Interior Design Trending Paint Colors
The big paint colors in the interior design world for 2024 are blues and greens that are paired with neutrals.
Both Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore chose blues for their 2024 Colors of the Year.
Sherwin Williams picked Upward, a lighter blue with a purple undertone. It is a pretty shade, but not exactly everyone’s taste as that purple doesn’t tend to work well with the more common blue shades that you find at Home Goods or Pottery Barn. Those blues have a blue/green undertone that doesn’t match the purple in Upward.
That being said, Upward is a gorgeous shade, and if if works with the other tones in your space, it is one that I would recommend with little reservation.
Benjamin Moore chose Blue Nova, which is a slightly less usable paint color. Blue Nova is nice, but brighter and darker than most people will use on their walls.
And then we are also still seeing the earthy greens being promoted. Shades like Evergreen Fog and October Mist were previous picks for Colors of the Year, and I’m still seeing a lot of designers go with green paint colors on cabinets.
There is also a lot of bold, saturated looks trending with designers. I’m talking the “color drenching” trend, where whole rooms are painted dark greens, moody blues or even soft blacks.
This gorgeous look is amazing in the magazines, but less practical for the average homeowner because it is a trend that will likely go out fairly quickly.
Instead, these darker and bolder shades are used a sparingly in real life homes, as pops of color on cabinets or accent walls.
On whole rooms, designers are also choosing soft neutrals that fall into the beige category.
This is where interior design and what people are painting in their homes collide.
2024 Paint Colors People are Actually Using in their Home
Neutrals, neutrals, neutrals. People love neutrals on their walls, and while the actual shade of neutral shifts over time, neutrals have been and will continue to be popular.
People are still choosing stark whites such as Pure White, soft whites like Alabaster, and warm whites like Shoji White.
But, as I mentioned above, beiges are coming into focus again as well.
Beige is a shade that is controversial to those who lived through the 90s and early 2000s. But don’t let the pinky beige of old define this gorgeous color for you.
Modern beiges such as Natural Linen give a warm, cozy vibe that works well with white, black, gray and warm toned accents.
If you’re looking for the sweet spot of a paint color that is trending yet classic, and will maintain popularity for years to come, beige is the place to be.
It will work for people that are coming out of the modern farmhouse trend because beige goes with the whites and creams that were so popular in it. It also looks awesome with the black accents associated with the modern farmhouse trend.
But it is also a great color to use with the newer trending gold accents we’re seeing. If you’re in the middle of transitioning your home over to the newer interior design styles, beige is a transitional color that can work in both worlds.
Plus, beige will go with most accent shades. It works great with blues, greens, pinks, and terracottas. As for design styles, it works with farmhouse, boho, coastal, traditional, and transitional (and more!).
The trick with beiges is to stay away from beiges with pink or yellow undertones. A taupe shade (a beige/gray blend with purple undertones) is a great option as well.
5 years ago, I would have never expected to be raving about the color beige, but it is the color to use in 2024.
So, should I paint all my rooms beige in 2024?
Since painting is an investment in both time and money, most people don’t want to do it every year. So it is important to pick a paint color that is one you will love for a long time to come.
If you’re not ready to jump on the beige bandwagon, don’t. I have fallen prey to painting my home a color that was trending that I didn’t love, and I have regretted it. While beige is a fairly safe shade, if you’re still loving the white look, you could try a paint color that hints beige like Shoji White.
Overall, its helpful to know what is trending, but more important to choose a color that you like.
